10 May 2013

Moving around your belongings is a stressful business; there is no doubt about it. Therefore, it is crucial that you are well prepared beforehand with an effective strategy that won't let you down. Here are some simple tips to follow to allow your move to be smooth and stress free. Plan

Make a list and write down everything you need to do. It is the best strategy that never fails. Make sure you remember to tick off the errands from your list as your packing gradually develops. Not only will this method allow you to get organised, it will be rewarding as you get further to the completion of packing. If you're moving with your family, ask them to help too.

Packaging

In order to pack and store your possessions, you will need numerous boxes. You can get these free from the grocery and it's better to have too many than too few to allow for any last minute items. You may also used previously used boxes as long as they are still in good shape. For your fragile items, it would be best to purchase plenty of bubble wrap to cushion the objects and prevent them from breaking. At the same time, it might be worth you having a clear out to see whether there are things you no longer need. Be firm with yourself and really have a think about what you need and what you can live without and leave behind. It will save you money, space and time. You could even earn some money from your unwanted belongings by selling them at a car boot sale, or do a good deed by donating to your local charity shop. When you pack, remember to place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items at the top.

Get organised

To prevent extra hassle, ensure that your things are kept together. For example, books should be placed together in one box; electrical items should be kept together in a separate box and so on. This will also make it less stressful on the move-in day and will enable you to find things easily. You should also label boxes so that you know what each box contains. Don't leave packing until the last minute; you must begin packing well in advance.

Protect your valuables

For your valuable possessions, keep them close by travelling with them. If there is little room for them to travel alongside you, place them in a box and package them well using plenty of newspaper and bubble wrap. However, for valuables like expensive jewelry and other high-valued treasures, it is crucial that they are transported by you and NOT by your removals company.

Make use of your luggage

Fill your suitcases and bags with towels, clothing and other essentials that you will need as soon as you move into your new home. It will save room and you'll be able to recognise them straight away when you arrive in your new home instead of having to search through unrecognisable boxes. Keep important documents close by

Your passport, birth certificate, bank records etc. should be kept with you at all times and not left with the removal company.

Packing up your possessions is a demanding task and if you're finding it too overwhelming to take on single-handedly, it might be a good idea to call in the professionals. However, if you feel capable of doing it by yourself, it will save you a tremendous amount of money and if you follow these straight forward tips, you are guaranteed to have a hassle-free move.
